The refurbishment of the former residential building in the historic centre of the city of Alicante for use as apartments for tourists visiting the city was the basic premise for this project.
From the architecture studio the proposal was made to respect the original structure insomuch as was possible, while restoring the original façade and taking maximum advantage of the elements of historical value formed the basis of our bid.
With the aim of utilising the privileged enclave to greatest extent possible, the ground plan was redistributed with the shifting of the interior courtyard to the north-east corner. In this way, the lighting conditions of the interior spaces are maintained while adding astounding views over the Santa Barbara castle. The new stairwell now occupies the space that contained the former courtyard, allowing thus for the creation of two apartments per floor in such a way that their layout within the building is optimised.
In the interior design of the rooms, we tried to showcase the original elements in the building, as well as the masonry walls and spacings between beams. As a results of the actions performed, a modern set of apartments has been achieved that blends the balance of the history of the area in which they are located.
